People look for “share a VPN” in three senses: share the internet of a phone with the tunnel on to a laptop or TV, put a VPN on a second device of their own, or give it to a relative. Below are all three, a one-minute check of the hotspot on your own phone and the ways that work for sure. Everything here is as of 24 October 2026.
In short. The reliable way to share a VPN with another device is a client on that device itself: each one takes a plan slot. Whether the internet a phone shares over Wi-Fi goes through the phone's tunnel, we have not measured and do not promise; you can check it on your own phone in a minute. A key or subscription link is not forwarded to a relative: they are handed a slot from your plan.
We make Mayak. One subscription works on all your devices at once: each takes one plan slot. For phones and Android TV there is our app; for computers and iPhone, the subscription link from your account page. 3 days free after you confirm your email, no card needed. The trial is free and needs no card; without an email it is 1 day.
🍎 On iPhone, Mayak works through the subscription link from your account page. The real Happ (publisher Flyfrog LLC) is not in the Russian App Store — searching that word there brings up look-alike apps from other publishers. INCY (publisher LLC ITDEV) works instead: checked on 22 September 2026.
What “sharing a VPN” means
People ask it about three different things, and the answers differ:
- Sharing the internet of a phone with a VPN on to a laptop, TV or another phone. The phone acts as a hotspot (the item is named differently in settings: “Hotspot”, “Tethering”). Covered below.
- Putting a VPN on a second device of your own: a laptop, tablet, TV. It is an ordinary install, and it takes a plan slot: what to install and how many slots it takes.
- Giving a VPN to another person: a spouse, parents, a child, a colleague. A file or link is not forwarded for that: how to do it right.
Sharing from a phone over Wi-Fi: does the traffic go through the tunnel
The idea is simple: the phone has the tunnel on, the laptop joins the phone's hotspot and, one hopes, goes online through the same tunnel. Whether it does is decided by the phone's system: how it routes hotspot traffic. In our articles on Samsung and LG TVs and on PS5 and Xbox we assume that on stock Android sharing goes past the VPN app. We have not measured it ourselves, and on phones of some brands the settings may differ, so we promise neither “yes” nor “no”. The shared device gets internet either way; the question is whose address sites will see: yours or our server's.
Check it on your own phone in a minute.
- Turn on the VPN on the phone and open our IP address check on the phone itself. Note the address: with Mayak on, it is our server's address.
- Turn on the hotspot on the phone and connect a laptop (or another phone) to it.
- On the connected device open the same page. The same address as the phone's means hotspot traffic goes through the tunnel. Your usual address means it goes past the tunnel.
Reload the page forcibly or open it in a new tab: from the browser cache it will show the old address (just as in the connection check). The result applies to this phone, this Android version and this app; another phone may give another result.
If the check passes, remember: the “Protected” icon on the phone speaks for the phone, not for the laptop behind it. The laptop will not tell you if the phone's tunnel drops, so you would have to compare the address again.
The reliable way: a client on the device itself
When the tunnel is on the device itself, it does not matter where the internet comes from: home Wi-Fi, a phone hotspot or a cable. Here is what to install and what of it we tested ourselves:
| Sharing to | What to install | Tested by us |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop or computer, Windows and Mac | Happ and the subscription link from your account page | Yes, on Windows 11 and on a Mac with a live connection, 25 September 2026 |
| Laptop with Linux | The AmneziaWG config file from your account page | The file works with our servers (as the help centre says) |
| Another Android phone or tablet | The Mayak app, signed in to the same account | Our own app |
| iPhone | INCY or Happ and the subscription link from your account page | Yes, both apps with a live connection |
| A TV or box with Android TV | The Mayak app; sign in with a code confirmed from your phone | The app runs on TVs since version 0.7.26 |
| Samsung or LG TV, PS5, Xbox | No client exists for them: only a router with OpenWrt and our file | The file on OpenWrt in a virtual machine, 24 September 2026; not on a hardware router and not with a console behind it |
Steps per system are on the “Where to tap” page. More: a VPN for a laptop, a VPN on a TV, a VPN on a router and what a Samsung or LG owner can do.
All your devices, one account. Create an account, install the app on your phone and on an Android TV set, and take the subscription link from your account page for the laptop. We do not ask for payment details for the trial. A confirmed email opens the access — 3 free days. An email is optional: without one the trial is 1 day.
How many plan slots the devices take
Every connected device takes one plan slot, whether it uses our app or someone else's. One subscription works on all your devices at once:
- Start: up to 3 devices, 300 rubles a month;
- Family: up to 5 devices, 500 rubles a month;
- Max: up to 10 devices, 700 rubles a month.
A phone, a laptop and a TV are three slots: Start is enough. The trial has two slots. When the slots run out, Happ says “Your plan’s device limit is reached”: open the “Devices” section of your account page and delete what you no longer use (more on this). All plans are in the help centre.
How to give a VPN to another person
- A key and a config file are not copied. The server recognises a device by its key, and two devices on one key get in each other's way. We tested it on our own machine on 13 September 2026: one device got a reply to all 289 requests out of 289, while two on one key got no reply to between 63 and 68% of requests, with gaps of up to 15 seconds in a row (the full test).
- Do not forward the subscription link. It is the key to your access: every device that opens it takes a slot on your plan. If you are looking for how to share a VPN in Happ, this is exactly that case.
- The right way is “My group”. On your account page open “My group” → “Invite a person”: by a one-time link or by account number (nine digits, shown in the account page and in the app). The person gets their own account and their own sign-in, and only you pay: your device limit is used. Until the person presses “Accept” themselves, there is no link between you.
- What the payer sees. The number, devices, the time of the last connections, the exit country and the traffic volume. Which sites and apps the person opens, neither we nor the payer can see.
- What to keep in mind. The whole group's access rests on your subscription: when it ends, it ends for them too. You can take a slot back at any time, and the account page tells you beforehand how many devices will disconnect. Details: the help centre and “A VPN on several devices”.
What we tested
- Happ with a Mayak subscription link on Windows 11 and on a Mac — a live connection, 25 September 2026 (details).
- Two devices on one key — on our own machine, 13 September 2026: the numbers above.
- Our file on OpenWrt 24.10.8 — a live connection in a virtual machine, 24 September 2026 (details).
- Plans, slots and “My group” — from the site's help centre, read on 24 October 2026.
What we do not know
- Whether hotspot traffic goes through the phone's tunnel. We have not measured it on a real phone. If the check above passed for you, whether the shared device takes a separate plan slot, we do not know either.
- Sharing over USB and Bluetooth and sharing from an iPhone we have not tested: on iPhone, Mayak works through third-party apps with the subscription link.
- Sharing from a computer (internet connection sharing) with Happ on we have not tested.
- How your firmware behaves. The result depends on the phone brand. If you tried it, write to support with the phone model, the Android version and the result: it is exactly the measurement we lack.
Short answers
