People search “VPN on a Rostelecom router” to put the whole home through a protected connection without an app on every device. The honest answer: on a router issued by the provider, our file will most likely not work. Below: why, how to check your router, what to do instead and how to turn a VPN off in a router. All as of 27 October 2026.
In short. Our file needs firmware with AmneziaWG 3 (in the file, the HeaderProtectionKey line). The stock firmware of TP-Link, ASUS, Xiaomi, MikroTik and the main Keenetic channel does not have it yet, and we have no information on the firmware of Rostelecom routers: we have never held one in our hands. So do not count on the file loading. Instead: the Mayak app on the devices themselves, or your own router next to the provider's one, where the file will load (we have walked only OpenWrt in a virtual machine). How to check and turn off a VPN in a router is below. If it is not the router but the connection through Rostelecom that fails, that is a different article.
We make Mayak. We have no app for routers: a router takes the file from your account page, and only if its firmware accepts it. For phones and Android TV we have our own app, for iPhone and computers a subscription link. A router takes one slot on the plan, like a phone. 3 days free on two devices after you confirm your email, no card needed. The trial is free and needs no card; without an email it is 1 day.
🍎 On iPhone Mayak works with the subscription link from your account. INCY was removed from the Russian App Store on 27 October 2026: if you already have it, it keeps working — do not delete it, it cannot be downloaded again from the Russian store right now. With a Russian Apple account, Clash Mi and Shadowrocket are available now (we have not verified them live with our link); Happ and INCY need an Apple account of another country.
Why our file will most likely not suit a Rostelecom router
What decides it is not the router brand but its firmware: does it know AmneziaWG 3.0 or newer. All our lines run on AmneziaWG 3 with header protection — in the router file that is the HeaderProtectionKey line. Firmware that knows only older versions or plain WireGuard will not accept the file, and you cannot delete the line: header protection only works paired with the server, and without it the tunnel does not come up.
What we know about firmware (our overview of routers):
- TP-Link, Xiaomi, ASUS, MikroTik. Their stock firmware has no AmneziaWG. GL.iNet has version 2.0 without header protection (TP-Link in detail).
- Keenetic. The main firmware channel does not take our file; the developer channel reports support for the right version, but we have not tested it (version table).
- OpenWrt. The only path we have walked: our file loaded with the standard button and gave a connection. That was on 24 September 2026 in a virtual machine, not on a hardware router (seven steps).
- A provider's router. The firmware is its own, and we have no information about AmneziaWG 3 in it.
We have never held a Rostelecom router in our hands and have not read the change lists of its firmware. So “it will not work” is a conclusion from a general rule, not a measurement on your model. You can check your model in a few minutes:
- Open the router's settings page. The address and password for signing in are usually printed on a sticker on the case; the model is there too.
- Look for a section called something like “VPN”, “VPN client” or “WireGuard”. No such section — the path is closed: there is nowhere to load the file.
- The section is there, but it holds plain WireGuard, OpenVPN or L2TP. It will not take our file: that is a different protocol, without masking and without header protection. We do not issue plain WireGuard, OpenVPN or L2TP files.
- Read the firmware change list (from the maker or the provider) and look for the words “AmneziaWG 3” or “header protection”. If they are there, the file will fit. If not, it will not.
We do not advise changing the firmware of a router the provider issued, and we have not tested it ourselves. If you rent it from the provider, it is the provider's equipment, set up for the provider's services; take such questions to the provider.
What to do instead
The first path is an app on the devices themselves. A router is needed to cover whatever an app cannot be installed on. If there is nothing like that, apps are simpler and give you more:
| Device | How to connect without setting up the router |
|---|---|
| Android phone and tablet | Our app: Google Play or the file from the site (how to install) |
| TV and box on Android TV | The same app (which TVs can) |
| iPhone, Windows, Mac | A subscription link in Happ or INCY (in the help) |
| Linux | The settings file from your account page |
| Samsung or LG TV | An Android TV box or your own router (overview) |
The phone app has something a router set up by our instructions does not: Russian apps can be let around the tunnel, and when the network changes it looks for a working path itself. Each device takes its own slot on the plan.
The second path is your own router next to the provider's one. In plain words: the Rostelecom router stays and hands out internet as before. You connect your own router to it with a cable, like any ordinary device, and load our file into that one. Everything you want to send through Mayak connects to your router instead. That way you do not touch the provider's firmware. But there are conditions:
- Your router's firmware must accept the file. Today only OpenWrt 24.10.8 is tested (in a virtual machine); for Keenetic there is a developer channel that we have not tested. We do not recommend models and we do not sell routers. The criterion is one: OpenWrt can be installed on the router, or its firmware knows AmneziaWG 3 (the OpenWrt path).
- We have not tested two routers in a row. If TV or telephony from the provider goes through the provider's router, ask the provider how they will behave with a second router. The “bridge” mode on the provider's router is also a question for them: we have no instructions for it.
- The whole home behind your router goes through one country. A router set up by our instructions has no “Russian services around the tunnel” switch. And when access ends, everything connected to it is left without internet (details).
The third path is changing the firmware of the provider's router. We do not recommend it and have not tested it: see above.
How to check whether a VPN is on in your router
If you never set anything up on the router, it most likely has no VPN: one appears when somebody puts it there — you, an acquaintance or a technician. Whether the provider itself switches on anything of the kind, we do not know: we have not looked into its services. There are two ways to check.
- By the address. Open our IP address check on a device connected to the router by Wi-Fi or cable and without VPN apps: it shows the address, country and location. If it is your country and your home provider, the traffic goes directly. If it is another country, or the address of a company that rents out servers, a tunnel is on somewhere. To tell where, open the same page on a second device that surely has no VPN apps, for example a guest's phone. The same foreign address means the tunnel is on the router. An ordinary address means the tunnel is on the first device.
- On the router itself. In the settings section called “VPN”, “VPN client”, “WireGuard” or similar, see whether a connection is there and what state it is in. Names differ between firmware, and we have not looked at them on Rostelecom routers.
If you put Mayak on a router, it shows in your account page under “Devices”, where the router takes one slot. There is also an indirect sign: the internet suddenly vanished for everyone in the house although the line is fine. The tunnel on the router may have been left with no way out — that is what happened on our test when the device was deleted in the account page (what to do).
How to turn off a VPN on your router
You turn it off where you turned it on: in the router's settings section where the connection was added.
- A router with OpenWrt. Delete the tunnel interface and reboot the router. On our test, after the interface was deleted the internet came back only after a reboot (step by step).
- Keenetic. Turn off the WireGuard connection on the Other connections page. That is what our overview says; we have not tested it on Keenetic ourselves.
- Other firmware. The same section where the connection was added. What it is called on yours, we do not know.
The order matters. First turn the tunnel off on the router, and only then delete the device in your account page (“Devices”) to free the slot on the plan. In the reverse order the home stays without internet until you get to the router.
If you do not know the router's password, ask whoever set it up. A reset with the Reset button returns the factory settings, and these erase the internet connection settings too, so ask the provider first.
If the VPN is on not in the router but on a phone, TV or computer, the router has nothing to do with it: how to turn it off on a phone and computer.
What it costs and how many slots it takes
A router takes one slot on the plan, like a phone; a file is issued for one country, and another country is another file and another slot. As of 27 October 2026, “Start” is up to 3 devices for 300 ₽ a month, “Family” up to 5 for 500 ₽, “Max” up to 10 for 700 ₽. The trial covers two devices, for example a phone and a TV.
An app on the device is the shortest path. Sign up, put the app on a phone or Android TV and see how the connection goes, and leave the router as it is. We ask for no payment details for the trial. 3 days free on two devices after you confirm your email, no card needed. The trial is free and needs no card; without an email it is 1 day.

What we tested
- Our articles and help on routers, Keenetic and TP-Link — on 27 October 2026. Everything above about stock firmware comes from there, with links to the makers' notes.
- Our file on OpenWrt 24.10.8 — with a live connection in a virtual machine on 24 September 2026: the parameters and header protection came through the import, and the connection came up (details).
- Deleting the device in the account page — on the same test the router was left without internet, along with everyone behind it.
Rostelecom routers are not among the things tested.
What we do not know
- What firmware your Rostelecom router model has and whether it has a VPN section. We have never held one in our hands.
- Whether any provider firmware accepts plain WireGuard. We do not know. If it does, our file will still not fit: it needs AmneziaWG 3.
- How the provider's TV and telephony behave with a second router, and how to switch the provider's router into “bridge” mode — not tested. Ask the provider.
- How Rostelecom's networks treat our connection. We have no measurements of them; what we know and what we do not is in a separate piece.
- How our file works on a hardware router. We tested in a virtual machine: the same firmware and packages, but a computer's processor. We did not measure speed on a router.
If you have tried it on a Rostelecom router after all, write to us the model and the firmware version, without the file itself, and we will add it here.
Short answers
How do I set up a VPN on a Rostelecom router? With the stock firmware most likely not at all: our file needs firmware with AmneziaWG 3, and we have no information that Rostelecom router firmware has it. Put the app on the devices themselves or connect your own router with suitable firmware next to it.
How do I install and configure a VPN on a Rostelecom router? First check in a few minutes whether the router's settings have a VPN section and which protocol is in it. Only firmware that knows AmneziaWG 3 will suit our file.
How do I turn on a VPN on a Rostelecom router? If a connection is already set up on the router, in the section where it was added. If it is not set up, there is none yet: see the answer above.
How can I check whether a VPN is on in my router? Open the IP address check on a device without VPN apps. A foreign country or the address of a company that rents out servers means a tunnel is on somewhere; check on a second device whether it is the router. In detail.
How do I turn off a VPN on a Rostelecom router? Where it was turned on: switch off or delete the connection in the router's settings, and only then delete the device in your account page. By firmware type.
Do I need to buy another router? Only if you want the whole home through one tunnel. If apps on the devices are enough, no. We do not recommend models and we do not sell routers.
The VPN does not work on Rostelecom — what has the router to do with it? Most likely nothing: that is a different task. Rostelecom is three different networks, and each has its own check.
How much does it cost? A router is one slot on the plan: “Start” is up to 3 devices for 300 ₽ a month. The trial needs no card and covers two devices.
