Free VPN 2026: how to choose one and check it

Which free VPN to choose in 2026 is not something a list can decide for you: what connects depends on your network and changes faster than lists are updated. What you can decide is what a particular free service lives on, how to check it in ten minutes, and whether free is enough for you at all. Everything here is as of 4 October 2026.

In short. A free VPN comes in four kinds: a free plan of a paid service with limits, an app with ads, “free forever” with no explanation, and a free trial. Choose one where it is clear what it lives on, and test it on your own network, both mobile and home. For an occasional need free is enough; for every day, a TV and a family it usually is not. Mayak has no free plan; there is a 3-day trial with no card once you confirm your email.

We make Mayak, a private network, and there is one section about us below. We have no free plan, but you can try us for free: the trial needs no card. The rest is how to choose and check a free VPN from anyone.

Why there is no list of “free VPNs that work”

Lists of “the best free VPNs of 2026” go stale before anyone finishes reading them. Whether an app connects depends on how your mobile carrier behaves, which city you are in and which network you use: home, mobile data, a friend's Wi-Fi. It works for your neighbour today and not for you, and both of you are right. Why that happens and what actually breaks, we explained in “Which VPN works in Russia”.

So a way to check any app yourself is more useful than a name from a list. It is the same for paid and free apps and takes an evening.

Four kinds of free VPN, and how you pay for each

Servers and traffic cost money every month, for a free service too. The kinds differ in who pays the bill.

KindHow you payWhat to check
A free plan of a paid service With limits: on traffic, speed, countries or devices. The service lives on those who move to a paid plan What the limit is and what happens when it runs out
An app with ads With attention and with device data that the ad modules can see Which ad and analytics modules the policy names
“Free forever” with no explanation If no source of money is visible, it may be you: your data or your bandwidth What the service lives on, stated plainly in its documents
A free trial Nothing, if no card is asked for. With a card, a charge if you did not cancel in time Whether a card is needed and what happens on the last day

None of these is bad in itself: a free plan of a paid service or ads are honest models when they are named. Only the third kind is a warning sign, where “what do you live on?” has no answer. How such “free” pays for itself, with examples, is in “Why a free VPN can be dangerous”. A separate case is a “free key” from a channel or a chat: what it really is, we covered in the piece on trial keys for Happ.

How to check a free VPN in ten minutes

Five steps before you send all of your phone's traffic through an app. The first four need no installation.

  1. Who the publisher is. The app's store page lists the developer, their website and a contact email. Do they match the service's own site? Install from the store or from the service's site, not from a link in a chat or a file in a channel.
  2. Is there a privacy policy, and what does it say: what is recorded, for how long, who it is shared with. A policy made of general words, or no policy at all, is already an answer. How to read it properly, beyond the slogan “no logs”, is in “A safe VPN”.
  3. What the app asks for. A tunnel needs one system permission: the “Connection request” dialog. Contacts, messages, the call log and precise location are not needed for it. If it asks, ask why.
  4. What it lives on. A paid plan or ads mean the source of money is visible. Neither one — go back to the third row of the table above.
  5. A real test. Connect on mobile data and on home Wi-Fi, open what you installed it for, and make sure your address really changed: four checks in a minute.

If the app asks for too much at step three and there is no answer at step four, you can stop there.

When free is enough, and when it is not

A free VPN is a reasonable choice for some tasks. The question is what your task is.

Usually enough if:

  • you need it rarely and briefly, for example on someone else's Wi-Fi in a café or a hotel;
  • you have one device, and you do not sign in to your bank, email or other important accounts through the tunnel;
  • you can live with traffic or speed limits and with ads.

Usually not enough if:

  • you need a connection every day, and the free plan's limit runs out before the month does;
  • besides a phone you have a laptop and a TV: a free plan often covers one device, and there may be no app for the TV at all;
  • the whole family uses it;
  • it matters who answers when it stops connecting.

If you are in the second list, the next question is what exactly to pay for. We covered it separately: “Paid or free VPN” has five questions to ask before paying, and “The best paid VPN” shows how to test a paid service before you pay.

A free VPN for mobile data: what to check separately

A common picture: at home on Wi-Fi the app connects, but on mobile data it hangs on “Connecting…”. Paid or free makes no difference here: some carriers get in the way of secure connections coming up, and some apps cope with that while others do not. What we measured on carriers ourselves is in the piece on mobile internet.

So test any app precisely on mobile data, with Wi-Fi off, and ideally in two or three places. And if on mobile data only Gosuslugi, your bank and marketplaces open and nothing else does, that is a different mode, and no app of this kind will connect in it: what that mode is.

What we offer instead of a free plan

We make Mayak and live on subscriptions, so we have no free-forever plan. Instead there is a trial:

  • 3 days on two devices after you confirm your email, no card needed (help). For example, on a phone and a TV.
  • Nothing is charged at the end: access simply ends, and we warn you in advance. How the trial works and what to test during it is in a separate piece.
  • There are no ads in the app, we do not sell data and use no ad trackers: it is written in our privacy policy.
  • After that, from 300 ₽ a month for 3 devices (plans). Decide whether to pay after you have tested it on your own network.

Test it on your own network before you decide. We ask for no payment details for the trial. A confirmed email opens the access — 3 free days on two devices.

What we checked

  • Our trial terms and plans: against our help centre and public offer as of 4 October 2026.
  • That we have no ads and sell no data: against our privacy policy as of the same date.
  • Other free apps we did not test and do not compare: this piece is a way to check, not a ranking.

What we do not know

  • Which free VPN works for you today. It depends on your network and changes; we did not measure that.
  • What a particular app's store page looks like. The checks are described in general terms, from how stores are laid out; we did not walk through them on a live example in every store.
  • How Mayak behaves on your network. That is what the trial days are for. If it does not work, write to us before paying.

Short answers

Which free VPN works in 2026? The one that passed a test on your network: lists go stale faster than networks change. Check the publisher, the policy, the permissions and the connection on mobile data.

Is there a free VPN with no ads and no limits? If there are no ads, no limits and no paid plan, ask what the service lives on: somebody pays for the servers.

Is there a free VPN for a year? Usually it is a free plan with limits, or a trial after which payment starts. Read what happens at the end of the term and whether a card is needed.

Is a free VPN safe to use? It depends on who is behind it and what it stores. How to check that is in “A safe VPN”.

Does Mayak have a free plan? No. There is a trial: 3 days on two devices after you confirm your email, with no card.
