VPN free trial: where the catch is and what to test before you pay

A free trial is there so you can test a service on your own network before paying — a VPN is no exception. The catch is almost always in one place: what happens on the last day. Either access simply ends, or money is taken on its own. Below — how trials work, what to find out before giving your card, and what to test in the free days.

Four kinds of free trial, and where the catch is in each

Trials work in different ways, and what you risk depends on the kind:

A trial with a card: you are charged unless you cancel

That is how trial subscriptions work in the app stores, and both stores say so plainly. Google: “At the end of your trial period, the first billing period begins and you automatically get charged the amount in your subscriptions terms. To avoid charges, cancel the subscription before the trial period expires” (Google Play Help). On the same page Google promises an email when the trial is about to end. Apple: “If you signed up for a trial subscription and you don’t want to renew it, cancel it at least 24 hours before the trial ends” (Apple’s instructions).

Three catches follow from this:

• The first payment is not necessarily for a month. You are charged for “the first billing period”, and a period, in Google’s words, may be weekly, annual or another. If you picked a year when signing up, a whole year is charged after the free days. Look at the amount and the period on the sign-up screen, not just at the word “free”.
• Deleting the app is not cancelling. The subscription lives in the store and is cancelled there — step by step for the App Store and for Google Play.
• Cancelling on the last evening may be too late. Apple asks you to cancel at least a day ahead. Put the trial’s end date in your calendar as soon as you sign up, with a reminder a day earlier.

On a service’s website or in a bot the rules are set by the seller, and there is no single help page for everyone, as there is for the stores. If a trial asks for your card, assume you will be charged at the end unless the terms say plainly otherwise. Already charged? A trial without a card: what to read in the terms

Without a card the service has nothing to charge: at the end, access simply stops. It is the calmest option, but it too has terms worth knowing before you start rather than on day three:

• What you give instead of a card. An email, a phone number, a Telegram account — that is your data too. What is done with it is written in the service’s privacy policy.
• When the days start counting. From registration or from the first connection. If from registration, then signing up and putting it off means the days run without you.
• How many devices. A trial on one device will not tell you whether a plan is enough for the family: you can test only what fits.
• What happens afterwards. Whether your settings are kept, and how to continue: by paying in the account area, in a bot or in an app store.

A trial in a Telegram bot

Sometimes a service lives in Telegram entirely: the trial, the payment and the support are all in one chat with a bot. If the trial was given without payment, there is nothing to charge yet — the catch starts with paying afterwards:

• Telegram Stars. A bot can set up a subscription for Stars, and it renews itself: every 30 days Telegram debits Stars from your balance (Telegram documentation). Such a subscription is cancelled in Telegram — details.
• A link to pay by card or via SBP (Russia’s Faster Payments System). You enter your card not in the chat but on the payment service’s page. Read the small print there: is it offering to save the card for future payments, and is that box already ticked? If the card stayed with the seller, charges are stopped in the bot itself or by a written refusal — step by step.
• Support only in the bot. Before paying, find out whether the service has another contact — an email or a website. If the bot stops answering, there will be nowhere to write about cancelling or money.

One more thing: deleting the chat with a bot is not cancelling. Charges follow the payment set up earlier, not the conversation.

A “trial key” for Happ: what it really is

Happ is a free client app: it has no servers of its own, and access to servers comes from whoever sells the key or the subscription link (how a subscription differs from a key). So a Happ trial key comes not from Happ but from a service, and for a limited time: when it runs out, the service stops accepting that key and the app will not connect.

• A key is like a password. Anyone who has it can connect with it, so a trial key is not forwarded or posted.
• Free keys from lists are not a trial. There is no seller to ask, and they do not live long (why, and what a stranger’s server sees).

What to find out before giving your card

Five questions that need answers before you pay, not after. No answer in the terms, on the payment screen or from support is an answer too.

1. What happens on the last day. Does access end, or is money charged? If charged — how much, and for what period: a month or a year.
2. Where the cancel button is. Find it before you start: in the app, in the bot, in the account area or in the store settings. No button means cancelling by correspondence.
3. Who you are paying. Whose name is on the payment page: that is how you will later find the charge in your bank statement.
4. Where the terms are written. In the document you accept when paying (in Russia it is called an offer), look for the period, the price, auto-renewal and how to refuse it.
5. Where to write if something goes wrong. An email or a form on the website, not only a chat that may go silent.

A separate warning sign is hurry. “Two hours left”, “the last trial keys” — that is how people are rushed so they do not read the terms. A trial whose terms you cannot calmly read before starting is better skipped.

What to test in the free days to see whether it works for you

A trial answers not “is this a good service” but “does it work for you”: on your carrier, at home, on your phone. Other people’s reviews cannot replace that — everyone’s network is different. Free days are usually few, so start on the first day and go down the list below: on the way, at work, at home in the evening. If you do not put it off, two or three days are enough for the whole list; in a single day you can test little more than whether the service connects at all.

1. Mobile data on your own carrier. On mobile data and on Wi-Fi a connection can behave differently (why). Turn the service on while travelling, at work and in the evening at home. What we know about each network is in our articles on MegaFon, MTS, Beeline, Tele2 and Yota.
2. Home internet and Wi-Fi. At home things can differ from mobile data, and the other way round (the breakdown; on Rostelecom — a separate article).
3. Switching networks. You leave home and Wi-Fi gives way to mobile data: did it reconnect on its own, and how long did it take (why connecting can be slow).
4. Whitelists. If in your region mobile data is switched to whitelist mode, test in that mode too: only a list of approved services is open there (what this mode is). About us, we say it up front: in this mode Mayak will not connect.
5. Speed — not from a single test. One measurement proves nothing: do several runs in a row, with one tool, in one place — with the service on and off (six rules for an honest measurement).
6. Video. A speed test may show tens of megabits while a video still stalls. Whose half of the route it is, a five-minute check will show.
7. Your bank and Gosuslugi. Open them with the service on. If they do not open, before giving up see whether the service can send Russian apps past the protected channel (how it works with us).
8. That the connection is really protected. Has your address changed, are DNS queries leaking — four checks.
9. The right device. If the trial covers one device, pick the one you will use most. Testing “for the whole family” during a trial will not work.

If it did not work in one of these places, that is not a verdict yet but a question for support. How they answer, and how fast, is part of the test too.

How our trial works

We sell access ourselves, so here is how our trial works — from our terms of use and our offer (in Russian), not from memory.

• 3 days on one device after you confirm your email, no card. We ask for no payment details for the trial, and it has no auto-renewal.
• The days count from registration. Until your email is confirmed there is no access, but the days are already running — confirm your mailbox right away.
• Where to sign up. In your account area or right in the Android app. Our Telegram bot has no trial: it sells access straight away (help centre).
• Once per email address. So that the trial is not given to the same address twice, we keep a fingerprint of the address — not the address itself — for 180 days, even if the account is deleted (privacy policy).
• Nothing is charged at the end; access simply stops. We warn you in advance in the app, in your account area and by email: one day and about ten hours before the end. There are no grace days after a trial: under our offer they are only for those who have paid.
• Devices and settings are kept. Choose a plan and everything works again; no need to set it up from scratch.
• You can pay before the trial ends — the remaining free days are not lost: the paid period is added on top of them.
• Auto-renewal appears only after the first payment, only from the balance in your account and only if you switch it on yourself.
• Test first, pay later — that is what our offer says: we ask you to check first that everything works for you, and only then to pay. Refund terms are in section 4 of the offer.
• Where we will not connect, we say so up front. In whitelist mode on mobile data Mayak will not connect; on Wi-Fi it connects as usual (why). We have no app of our own for computers: third-party apps take the subscription link, but we have not checked them there with a live connection (what to install on Windows).

What we checked

What we do not know

• How the trial works at a particular service on a website or in a bot. We do not review or name other services: each has its own rules, and its terms are what to read.
• Whether the seller will warn you before the trial ends. Google says it sends an email shortly before the end; we found no general rule for websites and bots.
• Whether the service will work for you. Nobody knows in advance: that is what a trial is for.
• How long the quotes will hold. Stores change their help pages; each quote has a link next to it, and the link is what to trust.

Short answers

Where is the catch in a free trial? Almost always at the end: if you gave a card, you are charged automatically, and not necessarily for a month. Cancel in advance — or choose a trial without a card.

How can I try a paid VPN without paying? Through a free trial. Calmest of all is one without a card: at the end, access simply stops. With a card, note the end date and cancel at least a day before it.

Will I be charged after the trial if I do not cancel? In the App Store and Google Play — yes, they say so themselves. On a website or in a bot, read the seller’s terms; if they took your card, assume you will be charged.

A trial in Telegram — what is the risk? Not in the trial but in paying afterwards: a Stars subscription and a card saved with the seller renew themselves. Details.

Where do I get a trial key for Happ? From a service that sells access: Happ itself provides no servers. Our trial works in Happ too — with the subscription link from your account, on one device.

A trial and whitelists: how do I test? Turn the service on with mobile data where and when the restriction is switched on for you. About us, we answer straight away: in whitelist mode on mobile data Mayak will not connect; on Wi-Fi it will.

And on a computer? We have no app of our own for Windows or Mac. Third-party apps take the subscription link, but we have not checked them there with a live connection — what to install. And remember: during the trial there is one device.

Can I get the trial a second time? Not with us: the trial is given to one email address once, and we keep a record of that for 180 days.
