A VPN with a Russian IP from abroad: which sites will not open without one, and where it will not help

You have left Russia, and now the Russian Railways site will not load, Russian Post answers with an error, and an online cinema sends you to its international version. The usual advice is a VPN with a Russian IP address — a “reverse VPN”. We checked where a Russian address really makes a difference and where it does not.

How a site knows you are abroad

A website does not see you. It sees the IP address the request came from. Address databases tell it the country and often one more thing: whose address it is — a home internet provider, a mobile carrier, or a company renting out servers in a data centre. More on that in our piece on banks and Gosuslugi.

A VPN with a Russian IP is the same kind of tunnel, only its exit is in Russia. Your traffic reaches the internet through a server in Russia, and the site sees that server’s address instead of your foreign one. People call this a “reverse VPN”; in Mayak it is the “Russia” location.

But it is a server’s address, not a home or mobile one. A site can look at both signs at once — the country and who owns the address — and the test below shows that sites look differently. To see which address sites get from you right now, use our IP address check.

What our test showed

On the night of 16 September 2026 we opened the home pages of 24 Russian sites from three of our own servers: in the Netherlands and Poland, standing in for “a person abroad”, and in Russia. The Russian server is the exit of the “Russia” location, so it is exactly the address a site sees once you pick it. All three addresses belong to data centres. How we measured and what the test does not tell you is in the next section.

Where the Russian address made a difference.

How to read this. Russian Railways and Russian Post did not open from abroad at all, and here the Russian address settled it. Ivi shows visitors from abroad a different site, its international one. START and Rutube opened everywhere, but from the Russian address the home page is noticeably larger; we did not look into what exactly differs, and page size tells you nothing about the film catalogue.

Where there was no difference. The home page opened the same way from the Netherlands, Poland and Russia:

• government: Gosuslugi, the state services portal, and its ESIA sign-in page (esia.gosuslugi.ru), the Moscow city portal mos.ru, and the Federal Tax Service site www.nalog.gov.ru;
• banks: Sber, VTB, Alfa-Bank, T-Bank, Gazprombank;
• films, music, social: Premier, VK, Yandex Music (from the Russian address the page is a little larger: 231 KB against 192), Kinopoisk — which sent every address to the Yandex sign-in page;
• for comparison: the Gismeteo weather site, the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper and the Okko online cinema.

Who turned away all three addresses.

Avito named the reason outright: the address. To Avito the Russian address of our server is no better than the Dutch one, because it too belongs to a data centre. Wildberries and Ozon showed a check that you are not a robot; the tool we measured with cannot pass it, while a real browser might.

What exactly we tested

• When. On the night of 16 September 2026. We repeated the run several times that night, and the results for Russian Railways, Russian Post, Ivi, START, Rutube, Avito, Wildberries and Ozon matched every time. One-off connection drops from Poland that did not repeat on the next run were left out of the table.
• From where. Three of our servers: in the Netherlands, Poland and Russia. All three addresses belong to data centres, not to home internet or a mobile network. The Russian server is the exit of Mayak’s “Russia” location.
• With what. The curl program, presenting itself as Chrome on Android and following redirects. Certificate checks were off: we measured what the server answers, not whether its certificate is trusted.
• What. Only each site’s home page. Not signing in, not personal accounts, not payments and not apps.
• What curl does not do. It does not run the page’s scripts and does not pass “not a robot” checks. On some sites the home page is a small shell of a few kilobytes: 2–7 KB at Sber and Alfa-Bank, 9 KB at Gosuslugi, and the browser builds the rest. A matching answer there only means “the server answered”, not “everyone gets the same page”.

Why a Russian address does not help everywhere

• Many sites do not check the country on the home page. Gosuslugi, the banks and mos.ru opened their home page from the Netherlands as well. A check, if there is one, may sit further in: at sign-in, at payment, in the app. Our test did not go there.
• A data-centre address shows. A Russian server address is still a server address. Avito turned it away just as it turned away the foreign ones. The “Russia” location gives you a Russian address, but not a home one, and some sites can tell the difference.
• A home page is not the whole site. If the home page opens, that does not mean sign-in will work or a payment will go through. And the other way round: when a site does not open from abroad at all, as with Russian Railways, the country may be the only issue, and a Russian address solves it.

Russian banks and Gosuslugi from abroad

The home pages of Gosuslugi and five banks opened the same way from the Netherlands, Poland and Russia. That tells you neither that you will be let into your personal account or banking app from abroad, nor that a Russian address will help. We did not test signing in or apps. If a service checks the country at all, it does so where our test did not go.

If you are in Russia and a bank refuses while a VPN is on, that is a different case with a different fix: the app is sent around the tunnel. It has a separate piece.

Abroad, check the “RU Apps” switch. When it is on, the apps on our list of Russian ones — banks, Gosuslugi and others — go around the tunnel. In Russia that is the point; abroad it means they reach the service with your foreign address, whatever country you picked in the list, because this switch does not depend on the chosen country. If it is on and you need a Russian address, turn it off and reconnect. It may have turned itself on: on first launch in Russia the app enables the list if you have not touched it.

Russian films and video from abroad

This is where the test showed the most difference and gives the least certainty.

• Ivi sends visitors from the Netherlands and Poland to its international site ivi.tv and keeps the Russian address on ivi.ru. We did not compare what each of them shows.
• START and Rutube opened everywhere, but the page is larger from the Russian address. We did not look into what differs.
• Premier served the same home page everywhere; Kinopoisk sent everyone to the Yandex sign-in page.

Which films to show in which country is the service’s own decision, and it can also tell a data-centre address from a home one. So we cannot promise that the “Russia” location will show you the same catalogue as at home.

How to get a Russian address in Mayak

1. Pick the country. On the home screen, below the connect button, there is the “Pick a country:” list — tap “Russia”. If protection is already on, the app switches over by itself. The “Ping” button shows how fast each country responds: from abroad the path to Russia is longer than to the country nearest to you.
2. Check the address. Open the IP address check: the country should say Russia.
3. Turn off “RU Apps” if it is on. The strip with the switch sits above the connect button. After turning it off, disconnect and connect again: the app set applies on the next connection (more in the help centre).
4. Need a Russian address for only some apps? Tap the set’s name on the same strip, mark “＋ New preset” and press “Select”. In the editor choose the “Only selected” mode, mark the apps and save, then turn the switch on the strip on and reconnect. Only the marked apps will go through Mayak; everything else goes direct, without protection.
5. Decide whether the app may change the country for you. “Settings” → “Network” has “Switch country automatically”, and it is on by default: if the chosen country stops working, the app switches to a working one and tells you. Sites will then see a non-Russian address. If you need Russia specifically, turn it off — the app will only offer to switch.

Who gets “Russia”. As of 16 September 2026 — every plan and the trial; there is no separate plan for it. Paying from abroad. Plans are paid with a Russian bank card or through SBP, the Russian fast payment system, and there is no other way: a card issued outside Russia will not go through. The trial needs no card, and someone with a Russian card can pay for your account, because the plan belongs to the account, not to the card (how to pay).

What we do not know

We try to make sure nothing more can be read out of our text than is actually in it.

• Whether you will be let into your bank, your Gosuslugi account or an app. We did not test signing in, with a Russian address or without one.
• Whether payments on Russian sites will go through. Payments were not tested.
• How Avito, Wildberries and Ozon behave in a real browser. We measured with a tool that cannot pass “not a robot” checks.
• Which catalogue Ivi, START, Rutube and Premier will show. We compared only the home page response.
• Other countries. We measured from servers in the Netherlands and Poland. From other countries, and from a phone on a foreign mobile network, we did not test.
• Through the app itself. We opened the sites from the same Russian server the app uses to reach the internet, but not from a phone through the tunnel.
• How long this will last. The test is one night, and sites change their rules without notice.
• iPhone and computers. Our own Mayak app is for Android and Android TV; on iPhone the access works through the third-party Happ app with the subscription link from your account. Happ is not in the Russian App Store; there incy (publisher LLC ITDEV) works instead, checked on 22 September 2026.

Short answers

What is a VPN with a Russian IP address? A protected connection whose exit to the internet is in Russia. Sites see that server’s address — Russian, but owned by a data centre. In Mayak it is the “Russia” location.

What is a “reverse VPN”? A VPN is usually chosen to appear online from another country. “Reverse” is when someone abroad wants to look to websites as if they were in Russia.

Why does the Russian Railways (RZD) website not open outside Russia? In our test www.rzd.ru did not answer addresses in the Netherlands and Poland at all, and opened for the Russian address. This is a case where the “Russia” location helped.

The Russian Post website is not working abroad. The www.pochta.ru home page answered the Dutch and Polish addresses with code 417 and a placeholder, and the Russian address with the normal page. We did not test parcel tracking or the Russian Post account.

Can I use Gosuslugi from abroad? In our test the Gosuslugi home page opened the same way from the Netherlands, Poland and Russia. Whether signing in works, and whether it needs a Russian address, we did not test.

Avito says “Доступ ограничен: проблема с IP”. That means “access restricted: a problem with your IP”. Avito answered us the same way from all three addresses, the Russian one included, and all three belong to data centres. The “Russia” location does not change that.

Can I watch Ivi outside Russia? From the Netherlands and Poland the site sends you to the international ivi.tv; from the Russian address it stays on ivi.ru. We did not compare what is available to watch on each.

Will the address look like a home connection? No. It will be Russian, but it is a server address in a data centre, not a home provider’s or a mobile carrier’s, and some sites can tell.

Will it work from any country? We measured from servers in the Netherlands and Poland. We did not test other countries and will not promise anything about them.

Can I pay with a foreign card? No: payment is by a Russian card or through SBP. The trial needs no card, and someone with a Russian card can pay for your account.

Do I need to turn off “RU Apps” abroad? If you want Russian apps to see a Russian address, yes. With the switch on they go around the tunnel, which means with your foreign address.

What about iPhone and computers? Our own Mayak app is for Android and Android TV. On iPhone Mayak works through the third-party Happ app with the subscription link from your account (Happ is not in the Russian App Store; there incy, publisher LLC ITDEV, works instead, checked on 22 September 2026), and on a Linux computer through the settings file from the same place.
