Does a Russian phone need a VPN in Turkey: what to check before you go

“Do I need a VPN in Turkey” is usually asked not about Turkey but about the phone: what will stop opening on it abroad, and what to do about it. Below: what we know (Russian sites and apps from abroad), what we do not (for example, Telegram from Turkey) and what to do before you leave. We have no servers in Turkey, so we do not promise a Turkish address.

In short. We have no servers in Turkey, Egypt, the UAE or Kazakhstan: Mayak gives no local address in those countries. What we do have is a Russian address — the “Russia” location, when it is in the app's country list. In our test on 16 September 2026 the Russian Railways and Russian Post sites did not open from addresses in the Netherlands and Poland and did open from a Russian one; Gosuslugi, mos.ru and the home pages of banks opened from everywhere, and we did not test signing in or apps. We have not measured Telegram or any other specific service from Turkey and do not promise them — how to check yourself is below. It is best to do it all before you leave: install the app, sign in, check the Russian address and pay (SBP, which needs a Russian bank, or USDT).

We make Mayak. Our app is for Android and Android TV; on iPhone and computers a subscription link works. We have one Russian address: a server in a Russian data centre, and the city cannot be chosen. There are no servers in Turkey. 3 days free on two devices after you confirm your email, no card needed.

What on a Russian phone may not open abroad

A site does not see you, it sees the address the request came from, and from it works out the country. From abroad a Russian phone arrives with a foreign address, and for Russian services that sometimes matters. Here is what our test showed (the night of 16 September 2026, the home pages of 24 Russian sites; in detail in a separate write-up):

  • Did not open from the Netherlands and Poland, did open from a Russian address: Russian Railways (RZD) and Russian Post. Ivi sent foreign addresses to its international site.
  • Served the home page the same everywhere: Gosuslugi, mos.ru, the tax service, Sber, VTB, Alfa-Bank, T-Bank, Gazprombank, VK. We did not test signing in to personal accounts or apps, so whether a bank will let you in from abroad we do not know. Our help says banks and Gosuslugi often do not admit foreign addresses.
  • Turned away every address, the Russian one too: Avito, Wildberries, Ozon. All three addresses we measured from belong to data centres. A Russian address will not help here.

We ran the test from our servers, not from Turkey and not from a phone on a foreign network. So it cannot tell you what will open for you in a hotel.

The Russian address: how to turn it on and where the catch is

In Mayak a Russian address is one line, “Russia”, in the country list. Your traffic reaches the internet from the address of our server in Russia. It is a data centre's address, not a home or mobile one, and some services tell them apart (Avito, exactly). What to do:

  1. Pick the country. On the main screen, under the connect button, there is a “Pick a country:” list — tap “Russia”. If protection is already on, the app switches by itself. Which countries exist, that list shows — it changes. If “Russia” is not in it, it is not connected at the moment; write to us.
  2. Check the address. Open the IP address check: the country should read Russia.
  3. Abroad, turn off “RU Apps”. While the switch is on, the apps from our Russian list (banks, Gosuslugi and others) go around the tunnel, that is, to the service with your foreign address, whichever country you picked. In Russia that is what you want, abroad it is not. The switch may have turned on by itself: on first launch in Russia the app switches the list on if you have not touched it. After turning it off, disconnect and connect again.
  4. Decide about auto-switching. Under “Settings” → “Network” there is “Switch country automatically”, on by default: if the chosen country stops responding, the app switches to a working one and says so. The sites then no longer see a Russian address. If you need exactly Russia, turn it off and the app will only suggest.

The path to Russia from abroad is longer than to the country nearest you: the “Ping” button shows how fast each answers. How much it adds in Turkey, we do not know: we did not measure from there.

Roaming, a local SIM or hotel Wi-Fi

The app needs only internet — mobile, hotel Wi-Fi, any; the account, plan and devices stay the same. What to keep in mind:

WayWhat to keep in mindWith Mayak
Roaming Your number stays with you. The cost is a question for your operator; look at its tariff. We add no traffic beyond what you spend anyway (that is what our help says).
Local SIM A new number. SMS codes go to the number registered with your bank, and your Russian SIM may be switched off — that is a question for your bank, not for us. The app does not care which SIM: it needs internet.
Hotel or café Wi-Fi A network that is not yours: whoever runs it sees the names of the sites you visit, but not their content (our test). In our capture no site name left the tunnel.

Which to choose depends on your plan and your trip; we do not advise here.

What to do before you leave

Installing and signing in need internet, and on a trip there may be no convenient moment. A list for the evening before the flight:

  1. Install the app. On Android — Google Play or the file from the site (how to install). On iPhone we have no app of our own: the subscription link from your account page works in Happ or INCY (where to tap). Update it: as of 27 October 2026 the current version is 1.0.19.
  2. Create an account and confirm your email. That opens 3 days free on two devices, no card needed.
  3. Do not start the trial days too early. Three days started a week before the flight run out in the middle of the trip.
  4. Pay while you are in Russia. Payment is SBP (a Russian bank is needed) or cryptocurrency (USDT). How SBP behaves from abroad we have not tested. Prices as of 27 October: “Start” 300 ₽ a month for up to 3 devices, “Family” 500 ₽ for 5, “Max” 700 ₽ for 10 (how to pay).
  5. See the difference yourself. At home pick any foreign country from the list and open the Russian site you need, then pick “Russia” and open it again. That shows whether the address changes the picture for your service. It will not work everywhere: our test found sites that turned away both a foreign address and a Russian one.
  6. Check “RU Apps” and auto-switching (the section above) and decide what you need abroad.

Does Telegram work in Turkey without a VPN: how to check yourself

We do not know. We measured nothing from Turkey. We ran our Telegram test from our own servers (it is described separately), and it says nothing about Turkey. Whether any specific service works on a trip depends on the network you end up on, and we cannot promise for it.

You can check on the spot, without guessing:

  1. Open Telegram on whichever network you have: airport or hotel Wi-Fi.
  2. Open it on mobile internet too (roaming or a local SIM). If one network works and the other hangs on “Connecting…”, the problem is the network, not the phone.
  3. Only then try switching Mayak on and compare. How to tell the cause apart in a couple of minutes is in our piece on Telegram.

The same goes for any other service: check at home, then on the spot on two networks.

And in Egypt, the UAE and Kazakhstan

The answer is the same. We have no servers there, we give no local address, and we measured nothing from any of these countries. The same things apply: a Russian address for Russian sites, the choice between roaming, a local SIM and Wi-Fi, and preparation before you leave. There is nothing more to say about these countries.

It is best to check all this at home. Create an account in advance, pick “Russia” and make sure the address is Russian. We ask for no payment details for the trial. 3 days free on two devices after you confirm your email, no card needed.

What we tested

  • Our help and articles — on 27 October 2026: what they say about trips, the Russian address, plans, the trial and payment. The app version comes from api.mayaknetworks.com/version.json: 1.0.19.
  • The home pages of 24 Russian sites from our servers in the Netherlands, Poland and Russia — on the night of 16 September 2026 (how we measured).
  • What the owner of someone else's Wi-Fi network sees — a traffic capture of 20 September 2026 (details).

We tested nothing from Turkey, Egypt, the UAE or Kazakhstan.

What we do not know

  • How all this works from Turkey. We measured from servers, not from a phone on a foreign mobile network or from hotel Wi-Fi.
  • Whether Telegram works in Turkey without a VPN, or any other specific service. Not measured.
  • Whether banks and Gosuslugi let you in from a Russian address while you are abroad. The home pages opened; we did not test signing in or apps.
  • Whether an SBP payment goes through from abroad. Not tested; that is why it is better to pay before you leave.
  • How fast the path to Russia is from Turkey. We did not measure speed from there.
  • How Avito, Wildberries and Ozon behave in a real browser. We measured with a program that does not pass “not a robot” checks.
  • How long this will hold. The test was one night, and sites change their rules without warning.

If you have already travelled and tried it, write to us how it went: such reports are valuable to us.

Short answers

Do I need a VPN in Turkey? It depends on what you plan to open. If it is Russian sites and apps that care about a Russian address, you need a Russian address: how to turn it on. For everything else we have not measured, so we cannot say “you need it”.

Which VPN works in Turkey? We do not compare other apps and do not know how they behave in Turkey. About ours: we measured nothing from Turkey, so check for free: 3 days on two devices after you confirm your email, no card needed.

Does Telegram work in Turkey without a VPN? We do not know; we have not measured it. How to check yourself on the spot.

Do you have a server in Turkey? No. Mayak gives no Turkish address.

And a VPN in Egypt, the UAE, Kazakhstan? We have no servers in those countries either. What you can do is in the section above.

What should I set up before the trip? The app, an account with a confirmed email and a paid plan. The list is in the section above.

Can I pay abroad? Payment is SBP (a Russian bank is needed) or USDT. How SBP goes from abroad we have not tested, so pay before you leave.

How much does it cost? “Start”, up to 3 devices, is 300 ₽ a month; “Family”, up to 5, is 500 ₽; “Max”, up to 10, is 700 ₽. The trial needs no card and covers two devices.
