Downloading a VPN for Android: where it is safe and how to check the file

There are two safe places to download a VPN for Android: Google Play and the service’s own website. Everything else — APK collections, links in chats, “free download” channels — gives you a file with the right name and unknown contents. Below: how to tell the real app in the store, how to check a file from a website, and why the very first install matters most. Everything here is as of 4 October 2026.

In short. Install from Google Play, and open the store page from a link on the service’s own site rather than by searching the store: that way you land on the right developer. No Google Play? Download the APK from the service’s site and check the address bar. Downloading is free everywhere; you pay for access to servers, and an honest service lets you try first. Mayak installs from Google Play or as a file from our site; both are version 0.7.40.

We make Mayak, a private network with its own Android app. This article is about where to install any such app; only one section is about us.

Where to download a VPN for Android: two safe places

All of a phone’s traffic goes through a secure-connection app. That makes “where do I get it” matter more than it does for a torch or a calculator: a fake of this kind of app gets access to everything at once.

SourceOK?What to check
Google Play Yes, the simplest way The developer’s name, and that the link came from the service’s site
The service’s own site Yes, if there is no Google Play or the store is unavailable The site address in the browser, the file size
Another app store Only if the service names that store on its own site That the store link is on the service’s site
APK collections, channels, chats No Nothing to check with: right name, unknown contents

The rule is simple: the source should be named by the service itself. A store or site it does not link to is somebody else’s source, even if the name and icon match.

Google Play: how to tell the real app

The store reviews apps, but it does not promise that a popular name belongs to the app you are looking for. Similar names and icons do appear, so keep three habits:

  1. Open the store from a link on the service’s site. A search by name may show a similar app from another developer first; the link from the site leads to exactly the right page.
  2. Look at the developer, not the name. The developer’s name sits under the app’s name, and the page also lists the developer’s website — it should match the service’s site.
  3. Read the permissions before installing. A secure connection needs neither contacts, nor messages, nor location. If they are requested, that is a question to answer before you install.

From Google Play the app installs without extra windows, and the store brings the updates too. So if your phone has Google Play, install from there.

An APK from the service’s site: how to install it

An APK is the same app, just downloaded outside the store. This route is for phones without Google services (some Huawei and Honor models, how to check yours) and a fallback for when the store is unavailable. When you install a file, Android asks two questions in a row, and both are routine:

  • Allow installs from this source. The permission goes not to the app but to whatever opened the file: the browser or a file manager. Without it the install will not start.
  • A Play Protect warning that the system does not know this developer. This is how Android greets any app from outside the store; it is not a virus alert. The window has a trap: the big button cancels the install, and the grey line next to it continues — explained in the help centre.

If the screen then says “App not installed”, the causes and fixes are collected in a separate article: five refusals we reproduced on a real file.

How to check that the file is genuine

An ordinary person cannot fully audit someone else’s program. But a few simple steps weed out nearly every substitute:

  1. The site address. Before downloading, look at the address bar: it should be the service’s own domain, not a look-alike and not a go-between page with a “Download” button.
  2. The size. If the service states the file size, compare it with what is in Downloads. Much smaller means the download broke off; very different means it is not the same file.
  3. Freshness. The file on the service’s site is a current build. Files on third-party “mirrors” are often old, and an older version will not install over a newer one (why).
  4. The signature. Every Android app is sealed with its developer’s key, and the system accepts an update only with the same signature. The key consequence: a genuine app, once installed from the right source, will not let a fake “update” in over itself.

That is why the first install matters most. Install from the right place, and from then on Android itself makes sure only a build from the same developer goes on top.

If you are comfortable with developer tools: the apksigner utility shows who signed a file, with apksigner verify --print-certs. Anyone can type any name into a signature, so the name alone proves nothing — the source you downloaded from is the stronger check.

Why an APK from a random site is risky

  • A repackaged app. It may contain the real app with someone else’s code added. Such cases are documented publicly; links to the research are in a neighbouring article.
  • Extra permissions. A fake asks for things a secure connection does not need: contacts, messages, call log, location.
  • Someone else’s signature. If the genuine app is already installed, a file with another signature will not go on top. If it is not, the fake installs — and from then on updates only from the same foreign key.
  • An old version. Even an honest but old file may lack what the current build can do, and its self-update may not work at all.

“Download a VPN for free”: what it really means

Downloading is free everywhere: neither Google Play nor the service’s site charges for the file. What you pay for is access to the servers your traffic goes through. A service without a subscription lives on something else: advertising, data or someone else’s money. That is not a verdict, but it is worth knowing before you install — what paying does and does not buy.

If a service is paid, the honest option is to let you try before paying and without a card. Then “download for free” means: download, install and see how the app behaves on your network without paying anything.

A “Russian VPN” for Android: what the question is really about

People asking for a “Russian” VPN usually mean one of three things, and each is checked differently:

  • An app and support in Russian. Visible on the store page and the website.
  • Paying from Russia. Visible on the pricing page before you buy: if there is no way to pay, the subscription breaks at the first renewal (how people pay from Russia).
  • A Russian address on the way out — going online through a server in Russia. That is a question about connection countries, not about where to download.

Mayak: where to download

  • Google Play. The developer on the page is Mayak Networks, the developer’s site is mayaknetworks.com, the package name is mayaknetworks.app. As of 4 October 2026 the store has version 0.7.40.
  • A file from our site — in the “Download” section on the home page or at the short address mayak.ws/dl/app. As of 4 October 2026 it is version 0.7.40 and weighs about 18.6 MB. The file is signed with our key, and the app checks that signature at every self-update: it will not install a substituted copy over itself.
  • We have no other stores right now. If you see Mayak anywhere other than Google Play and our site, that is not our channel.
  • The two channels do not install over each other. The store build and the site file have different signatures; switching means uninstalling and installing again (details). The subscription lives in your account and is not lost.
  • What the app does not ask for: contacts, messages, location and files. The camera serves a single screen — signing in with a code from another device — and you can do without it.
  • Language and payment. The app and support speak Russian; payment is by Russian card or SBP. Plans are in the help centre.

We do not choose between Mayak and other services for you: the signs that show it before you install are in “VPN for Android: which one to choose”.

Download it and try it on your own phone. Install the app and create an account right in it. We ask for no payment details for the trial. A confirmed email opens the access — 3 free days on two devices.

What we checked

  • App versions — from our version file, 4 October 2026: 0.7.40 on the site and on Google Play.
  • The size of the site file — from our server’s reply to a request for the file, 4 October 2026: 18,589,170 bytes.
  • The Google Play page — opened on 4 October 2026: developer Mayak Networks, site mayaknetworks.com, package mayaknetworks.app.
  • That a copy with another signature does not install on top — a live refusal on an emulator on 16 September 2026, described in the installation article.
  • The app’s permission list — from its Android manifest, 20 September 2026.

What we do not know

  • What the install windows look like on your phone. The install-from-source permission and the Play Protect window are described from our help centre; manufacturers’ skins name the items their own way.
  • What is inside other people’s APK collections. We do not check them and will not guess: the “store or the service’s own site only” rule spares you that check.
  • Our signing key’s fingerprint is not yet published on the site, so there is nothing to compare it with by hand right now. Our reliable check is a different one: the source, plus the signature the app verifies itself on every update.
  • Whether the store is available on your device. Our app page opened for us; on your phone, check yourself — that is what the second route, the file from the site, is for.

Quick answers

Where can I download a VPN for Android for free? On Google Play or the service’s own site: the download itself is free there. You pay for access to servers; with us, the trial comes first and is free.

Is installing an APK safe? Yes, if the file came from the service’s own site. Not from collections, channels and chats: there is nothing there to check the contents with.

Why does Android warn me when I install a file? It greets any app from outside the store that way. Allow installs from the source, and in the Play Protect window tap the grey line, not the big button.

How do I know the app on Google Play is the real one? Open the store from a link on the service’s site and compare the developer’s name and website on the page.

Where do I download a Russian VPN for Android? Same places: Google Play or the service’s site. Check “Russian” by three things: the app’s language, paying from Russia and the connection countries.

Can I install the site file over the Google Play version? No, the signatures differ. To switch sources, uninstall the app and install it again.

It will not download or install — what now? Most often the file did not finish downloading, or the same app is already installed from another source: all five causes.
