Your VPN is not working on iPhone: the switch will not stay on, “Connecting…” hangs, or the icon is lit but pages do not load. Before you change services, check the iPhone itself — it has causes of its own that Android and computers do not. Below are six checks, each with its path in Settings according to Apple support, and what to do if the phone is not to blame. Everything here is as of 4 October 2026.
In short. If the VPN will not connect on your iPhone, go in this order: turn off other apps of this kind — only one configuration can be active; look at Settings → General → VPN & Device Management; make sure the client is allowed to use cellular data; turn off Low Power Mode and refresh the subscription in the client by hand; switch on automatic date and time; update the client and check its publisher. If the iPhone is fine, the cause is the access term, the server or the network — where to look next.
We build Mayak — a private network. Our own app is for Android; on iPhone we provide a subscription link for Happ and INCY. This article is about any VPN on an iPhone; only one section is about us. 3 days free after you confirm your email, no card needed. The trial is free and needs no card; without an email it is 1 day.
🍎 You are on an iPhone: you can connect to Mayak with the subscription link from your account in Happ or INCY (INCY is in the Russian App Store) — how to add the subscription to INCY.
First, work out what exactly is not working
“Not working” on an iPhone looks one of three ways, and each has its own set of causes:
- It does not connect at all. The switch flips back at once or “Connecting…” hangs. The cause is either the iPhone (six checks below) or the path to the server — how to tell them apart by the symptom is covered in “Why a VPN won't connect”.
- Connected, but no internet. The VPN icon is in the status bar, pages do not load. The most common cause is an expired term with the provider; the rest are in “connected, but no internet”.
- Works on Wi-Fi, not on mobile data (or the other way round). Then it is usually the network, not the phone: what we measured on each operator is in “Not working on mobile data”. One cause of this picture is still worth checking on the iPhone itself — check 2.
How a VPN works on iPhone: three places it breaks
On an iPhone you almost always have a pair: a client from the App Store and a provider who supplies the servers through a subscription link (why). In between sits the system itself: on the first connection the client asks permission to add a VPN configuration, and from then on the iPhone keeps it. So the chain can break in three places:
- The iPhone — configurations, permissions, the clock, Low Power Mode. This takes five minutes to check, and it is where to start.
- The client — an old version, a wrongly added link, a look-alike of a well-known name.
- The provider and the network — the term has run out, the server is down, the network does not let the connection through.
Six checks on the iPhone itself
After each one, try connecting again. The Settings paths follow Apple support; names may differ slightly between iOS versions.
1. Only one configuration is on
An iPhone can have only one such configuration active at a time — Apple says so in its developer documentation (details). If another service's app is installed, its configuration may be the selected one rather than the one you are switching on. Open Settings → General → VPN & Device Management: it shows which configurations are installed and which one is selected. Pick the right one, and delete apps you no longer use together with their configurations. Apple warns that deleting a profile also deletes all the settings associated with it.
2. The client is allowed to use cellular data
iOS lets you turn off cellular data for a single app: Settings → Cellular, with the list of apps further down. According to Apple, when cellular data is off for an app, the iPhone uses only Wi-Fi for it. If the VPN connects at home and not outside, find your client in that list and check the switch. We have not tested on a live iPhone exactly how this affects the client's tunnel — but the check takes seconds.
3. Low Power Mode is off
Among the things Low Power Mode limits, Apple lists background app refresh. A client that works with a subscription link refreshes its server list on its own, on a schedule. If the provider has changed addresses and the phone has been in Low Power Mode all day, the client may still hold the old list. Turn the mode off (Settings → Battery) and refresh the subscription in the client by hand. We have not measured how this mode affects the connection; this is a check, not a diagnosis.
4. Date and time are set automatically
Secure connections check certificates against the device clock, and some protocols also compare the time with the server: for VMess, according to the Xray documentation, the difference must not exceed 120 seconds. Open Settings → General → Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. Clocks drift, for example, after the battery has run flat or the time has been changed by hand.
5. The client and the subscription are fresh
Update the client in the App Store, open it and refresh the subscription by hand. Look at the subscription line if the client shows one: it often carries the access term. If the term has passed, renew with the provider — the client has nothing to do with it. If the link is ours, you can see the reason for a refusal by opening the link in the phone's browser: the page names it in words, and it does not take a device slot (table of refusals).
6. The client is the real one
In the Russian App Store, well-known names are surrounded by look-alike apps from other publishers: a search for “happ” in our measurement on 23 September 2026 returned 17 apps, and none came from the publisher of the real Happ. Open your client's App Store page and find the developer's name: Happ — Flyfrog LLC, INCY — LLC ITDEV. If it does not match, delete it and install the real one (how to tell). If Happ came from TestFlight, the build may have expired: under Apple's rules it stays available for 90 days (details).
If the iPhone is fine: the provider and the network
All six checks passed and there is still no connection — the break is beyond the phone. In this order:
- Switch networks within the same minute: Wi-Fi to mobile data and back. A different result means the network is to blame. If on mobile data only Gosuslugi, your bank and other listed services open, that is the whitelist mode: no service of this kind connects in it (why).
- Try another server from the list in the client.
- Check whether all such apps stopped at once — that is no longer about the iPhone: why none of them connects.
- Follow the routine for link-based clients — it is shared by Happ, INCY and similar apps: five minutes, step by step.
- Write to the provider, not to the client's author: the provider runs the servers. Say which of the three pictures you see and what you have already checked.
Mayak on iPhone: what exists today
- We have no iPhone app of our own yet; it is in development, and we do not give dates.
- You can connect right now with the subscription link from your account, in Happ or INCY. We tested both with a live connection on an iPhone: Happ on 20 September, INCY on 22 September 2026. The real Happ is not in the Russian App Store, INCY is — how to add the subscription to it.
- The link delivers one way of connecting. Someone else's client does not try paths automatically the way our Android app does — which is why the checks above matter more on an iPhone.
- Every device takes a slot on the plan. If the slots are full, a new device will not be added; remove the one you no longer need in your account.
- What we do not promise. That it “always works”: your network is your own. In the mobile whitelist mode Mayak will not connect — neither through the app nor through the link.
Try it on your own iPhone. Create an account, open the “Connecting by link” card in your account area and add the link to INCY or Happ. We ask for no payment details for the trial. A confirmed email opens the access — 3 free days on two devices. An email is optional: without one the trial is 1 day.
What we checked
- iPhone Settings paths — from Apple support, read on 4 October 2026: VPN & Device Management, cellular data per app, Low Power Mode and what it limits, date and time.
- One configuration at a time and the 90 days of TestFlight — from Apple documentation, as covered in the Happ article.
- The clock tolerance for VMess — from the Xray documentation.
- The App Store catalogue — our measurement on the night of 23 September 2026; the INCY page re-read on 4 October 2026: publisher LLC ITDEV, free, requires iOS 15 or later.
- Happ and INCY with our link — a live connection on an iPhone, 20 and 22 September 2026.
What we don't know
- How Low Power Mode and disabled cellular data affect a particular client's tunnel. We rely on Apple support; we have not reproduced these two cases on a live iPhone.
- What Settings look like in your iOS version. Item names change slightly between versions.
- What each client shows on screen when it is refused. Every client has its own wording; we have not captured it.
- How your network behaves. Only you can see it. If it does not work, write to us with your operator, city, iPhone model and client.
Quick answers
Why is my VPN not working on iPhone? Most often one of three things: another VPN configuration, an expired term with the provider, or a network that does not let the connection through. The six checks separate the first from the rest.
Why won't the VPN connect on my iPhone when it used to work? Check the term in the client and refresh the subscription by hand: the provider may have changed addresses. Then switch networks — a different result on Wi-Fi and mobile data means it is the network.
Where are the VPN settings on an iPhone? Settings → General → VPN & Device Management. It shows the installed configurations and which one is selected.
The VPN on my iPhone is connected but there is no internet — what now? First check the access term, then try another server. The other causes are in a separate guide.
The VPN works on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data? Check whether the client is allowed cellular data. If it is, it is the network: what we measured on operators.
Will reinstalling help? Rarely: the term and the servers live with the provider. Updating the client is useful; what is worth deleting is extra configurations and look-alikes of well-known names.
Will Mayak have its own iPhone app? Yes, it is in development; we do not give dates. For now — a subscription link in INCY or Happ.
